Philoptochos
Philoptochos Societies are an important part of Greek Orthodox Parishes everywhere. The word Philoptochos means "friend of the poor". Who are the poor? Those who are poor in financial and material resources, and also those who are poor in spirit, health, companionship, emotional stability and whatever is needed to lead a fulfilling life.
Philoptochos is the largest organization of Greek Orthodox women, supports many charities while spiritually enriching its members through their participation in its work. Freely you have received, freely give. (Matthew 10:8). The benevolent works of Philoptochos are a continuation of Christ's ministry on earth. Through our participation in Saint Katherine's programs we can return to God a portion of the time, talents and resources with which He has gifted us.
Saint Katherine Philoptochos is comprised of a number of Circles each of which has special interests and allows each Circle to focus on its particular cause or charity. In addition our Philoptochos general fund contributes to the following local charities: WIND Youth, Elk Grove Food Bank, and WEAVE. The following is a list of our Circles and their special interests:
- Abigail Circle - Our purpose is to sponsor and host hospitality events and functions held by our Parish to encourage Christian fellowship. Our goals are to recruit others and dedicate our time and talents to the growth of Saint Katherine Church.
- Anna Circle - Our goal is to minister to women and children in crisis and to help sick and needy children. Some of the charities we have supported are the Ronald McDonald House, Mercy Corps, Chicks in Crisis, WEAVE, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Our focus is to support women during crisis periods in their lives, help them care for their children, and help sick children have access to the medical care necessary for them to thrive.
- Mary Magdeline Circle - The purpose of our Circle is to help coordinate the weekly Coffee Hours and to provide hospitality to visitors and parishioners during Sunday Coffee Hours.
- Rachel Circle - The focus of our Circle is to organize and coordinate the major annual events to raise funds for Philoptochos charities and ministries.
- Rebecca Circle - Our Circle members will use their skills to make handcrafted items of yarn, thread or cloth, donating them directly and raising funds for various charities.
- Susanna Circle - In keeping with the National Philoptochos program, this Circle is committed to meeting the needs of the families within our parish by providing spiritual guidance through discussion with spiritual leaders, participation in a Prayer Circle, welcoming newcomers, and ministering to shut-ins and ill parishioners.
- Joanna Circle - Our Circle has the goal of supporting our community by focusing on education and scholarship opportunities for students in college and vocational school. We also will help to administer the Saint Katherine Ionian Village Scholarship Program.
